Alone on Grizzly Mountain

Chilko Lake in British Columbia was the setting for season 8 of the History Channel's survival show Alone.

Alone season 8

10 wilderness experts compete to see who can survive the longest in total isolation. There are no camera crews. No producers stationed nearby. Their only links to the outside world are a satellite phone they can use to tap out and weekly medical check-ins to ensure they’re healthy enough to continue. Equipped with just 10 items selected from a pre-approved list of basic, low-tech gear and a camera kit for filming themselves, the last man or woman standing returns to civilization with a $500,000 prize. Where was 'Alone' Season 8 filmed?

Season 8 of Alone was filmed in the remote Chilcotin region of British Columbia, Canada. Specifically, contestants were dropped along the shores of Chilko Lake (also known as Tŝilhqox Biny), a high-elevation glacial lake situated over 3,800 feet above sea level. This made it the first alpine season of the series, with the lake's location on the dry eastern side of the Coast Mountains presenting unique survival challenges .

“We are always looking for locations with rugged beauty and incredible wildlife. Chilko Lake and the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast area offered both in spades”
— Alone Executive Producer, Ryan Pender

Grizzly Mountain

The mid-Chicotin area hosts one of the densest grizzly bear concentrations in North America with an estimated 200 grizzlies in the surrounding Chilko Valley/Ts’ilos Provincial Park.

Clay Hayes

Wildlife biologist turned professional bow builder, Youtuber, and author is the winner of Alone season 8 after surviving 74 days in Chilko Lake, British Columbia. He overcame freezing temperatures, starvation, and isolation. He faced down a charging grizzly bear, tracked a mountain lion, and was the only contestant to kill a deer.
